Course Overview

Cambridge English: Pre A1 Starters at the British College of Education is designed for young learners who are taking their first step towards learning English and preparing for the Cambridge English Pre A1 Starters examination.

This programme introduces children to everyday English through engaging, age-appropriate learning activities based on familiar topics and situations. Students will develop essential vocabulary, basic language structures, and the confidence to understand and use simple English.

The programme provides focused preparation for all three areas of the Cambridge Pre A1 Starters examination — Listening, Reading & Writing, and Speaking — while helping children develop their overall English language ability in a fun and supportive learning environment.

Through professional guidance, interactive activities, stories, games, regular practice, and Cambridge-style exam activities, students will gradually build the language skills and confidence needed to approach the Starters examination positively.

Listening
Develop the ability to understand simple instructions, conversations, descriptions, names, numbers, colours, and familiar everyday vocabulary.

Reading & Writing
Build the ability to recognise and understand simple words and sentences, spell familiar vocabulary, complete simple texts, and answer questions using short written responses.

Speaking
Develop confidence in answering simple questions, identifying people and objects, describing pictures, following spoken instructions, and talking about basic personal information.

Vocabulary & Language Development
Build essential vocabulary based on familiar topics and develop the basic language structures needed for everyday communication.

Pronunciation & Communication
Develop clear pronunciation and confidence in using simple English in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Cambridge Exam Practice
Become familiar with Cambridge Pre A1 Starters-style tasks through guided practice, sample activities, revision, and mock-test preparation. Cambridge provides official wordlists, sample tests, classroom activities, and mock-test resources for Starters preparation.

Cambridge English: Pre A1 Starters

Level: Pre A1
Skills Assessed: Listening, Reading & Writing, Speaking
Exam Format: Paper-based with face-to-face Speaking

The paper-based Starters examination consists of Listening (about 20 minutes), Reading & Writing (20 minutes), and Speaking (3–5 minutes). Each component is reported using a maximum of five shields.
